The Great Plaza at
Penn's Landing, reverberated with the sounds of the Caribbean this Sunday,
August the twenty-eight. This event celebrated the Nineteenth Annual Caribbean [Family] Festival. Let me tell ya plain it was the best darn Caribbean Celebration I have [ felt] in a long time. Notice I didn't say enjoy, or any other over-used superlative -- Soul felt. Other inspirations were felt in seeing the families that turned out, those with kids in particular to celebrate their Caribbean heritage. I can't but think sometimes that their is a drift.... The atmosphere of this event was somewhat of a comforting reaffirmation. The great music aside , we were treated to some great theatrical performances by some fine artist in their own right: Oli Lasana and her smooth melodic guitar enhanced rap. (Onilasama.com) . Uva, a petite Panamanian lady with a big voice and something to say, that makes you listen. It was a very good day, and a family outing with many little ones at the front of the stage reveling in the Caribbean rhythms of a popular young group from New York. Very prominent here in the Philadelphia area. The music came to an abrupt halt. At this point I'm not certain what brought this about. Timi Tanzania an official of this event. Thought the group had crossed the line. The good steward that he is, he was concerned about the kids being exposed to certain elements of the groups performance. I have no first had knowledge of what this was. My focus was on photographing reveler activity. There's something I think needs to be said about conduct at some of our celebrations. I have heard from many families over the last three years of photographing these festivals and carnivals. They express concerns over exposing their young ones to some of the overly exuberant behavior which seem to be so common these days at our events. They are staying away. As for the performers. It must be born in mind that a night club performance, and an open air venue, such as yesterday's event. Call for the appropriate behavior. I don't know why that need to be said!! |
