Damned Lies and Statistics
Statistical thinking will one day be as necessary for efficient
citizenship as the ability to read and write. -- H. G. Wells

You've seen this quote before on a piece we looked at earlier called "How to
Lie with Statistics"  by Darrel Huff, currently in the Good Book Archive.

"Damned Lies and Statistics" by author Joel Best take this subject on with
even more present-day examples of how statistics are used to deceive us.
Look around you H.G Wells got it right. If you don't read, you're just another
slave to whom ever choose to enslave your thoughts.

The misinformation, smear campaigns, and spin knows not shame. The
master of The big lie Adolph Hitler, said it best. "The great masses of
people...will more easily fall victims to a great lie than to a small one". Do
you know that over 40percent of the American people believes that Iraq's  Saddam
Hussein was responsible for  "911"? -- how did that happen?

Does the number of children gunned down doubles each year? Does
anorexia kill 150,000 young women annually? Does white males
account for only a sixths of new workers?

Startling statistics shape our thinking about social issues. But all too
often these numbers are wrong. This book is a lively guide to spotting
bad statistics and learning to think critically about these influential
numbers...

Joel Best bases his discussion on a wide assortment of intriguing
contemporary issues that have garnered much media attention,
including abortion, cyberporn, homelessness, the million man march,
teen suicide, the US census, and much more. Using examples from
the New York Times, the Washington Post, and other major news-
papers and television programs.
