The
venue is Lamport stadium, Toronto. The event is the Caribana Carnival
King and Queen competition.
And competitive it
was. The band leaders and their designers, seem to have
reached a new level of creativity. We West
Indians are very creative people! There'll be no further discussion.
Congratulations to Marlon Singh's "Warriors" winner of the Queen
contest and the winner of the King contest, Louis Saldenah's "Havoc." "Some competitions are won on
the weakness of the
opponent, then there're those that are won despite the strength
of the
opponents. These are especially sweet."
Creative Juices, Creative talent, Creative license. These emotions all came to bear sitting there watching the creative genie open up whole hog. What caught my eyes in my scrutiny of this Singh's Warrior is it's flowing color scheme, the design proportions relative to the size of it's human host. This female host is of Amazonian proportions which fit nicely with this piece. Havoc in a beautiful contrasting color scheme, an imposing piece that dwarf it's host. These viewpoints are personal and are not based on Carnival criteria.
